Durham and England bowler Brydon Carse has been banned from all cricket matches for three months and given a 13-month suspended sentence for accepting charges of breaching cricket's anti-corruption rules.
This violation occurred because Carse placed 303 bets on various cricket matches over more than two years.
The bets placed by Carse from 2017 to 2019 were not on matches he participated in.
Nevertheless, the integrity rules of cricket betting prohibit professional players, coaches, and support staff from gambling on cricket matches anywhere in the world.
Regarding his actions, Carse himself stated: "Although these bets were placed years ago, that is no excuse, and I take full responsibility for my actions. I want to thank the England Cricket Board, Durham, and the Professional Cricketers' Association for their support during this difficult time.
"I will work hard in training over the next 12 weeks to ensure that when I can return to the field, I can repay everyone's support on the pitch."
The England Cricket Board also commented: "We take these issues very seriously and do not tolerate any form of breach of cricket's anti-corruption rules. We support the regulatory body's decision and their consideration of mitigating factors in Brydon's case. He has cooperated and expressed regret for his actions.
"We are satisfied that Brydon has made progress in the five years since the incident and has a deeper understanding of his responsibilities. We hope his case can serve as an educational example for other cricketers."
In recent years, other athletes have also been banned for similar gambling violations, including football player Ivan Toney, who was banned for eight months.
