Less than two months away from the anticipated launch of online gambling regulations in Brazil, the country’s Attorney General has filed suit against the bills legalising the market.

Paulo Gonet filed the lawsuit over concerns related to consumers, claiming the legislation violates consumer rights and does not provide ample addiction protections.

The suit would grant an injunction against the legislation, which would temporarily stall the launch of the online gambling market in the country.

The move is the culmination of concerns around the social and financial impacts of a regulated online gambling market in the country, with the Senate introducing a bill banning online sports betting last month.

Both President Luiz Lula da Silva and Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco have publicly voiced concerns around problem gambling ahead of the launch, with Lula da Silva previously threatening to shut down the market launch if it negatively impacts poor and vulnerable citizens of Brazil.

The Senate is also set to investigate the social and financial impacts of the regulated online sports betting and igaming market but has been delayed by personnel issues.
