The Philippine National Police (PNP) recently announced the successful resolution of a kidnapping case targeting foreigners, arresting two Chinese nationals suspected of the crime. This incident has once again drawn attention to crimes associated with Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO).
Case Details
In the early hours of May 2, three foreigners (two Chinese citizens and one South Korean citizen) were kidnapped by seven armed individuals while heading to Punta Fuego beach in Nasugbu, Batangas for fishing. According to the police, some of the kidnappers were dressed in police uniforms and acted professionally. Two Filipinos who were with the victims were later released at different locations.
On May 3, police at a checkpoint in Bacoor, Cavite intercepted a suspicious pickup truck. When the driver refused to stop, police shot at the tires to force the vehicle to halt, eventually capturing two Chinese suspects aged 27 and 29. A .45 caliber pistol, a 9mm pistol, and several bullets were seized at the scene.
The kidnappers contacted the victims' families directly through the victims' mobile phones, demanding ransom in cryptocurrency. Although the exact amount was not disclosed, the victims were released the next day. The police noted that the victims had bruises, indicating they had been subjected to violence.
POGO Crime Network Exposed
Philippine Police Chief Rommel Marbil confirmed that this case is linked to the offshore gaming industry (POGO). The police are pursuing other suspects, including six Filipino accomplices and the driver. In recent years, crimes related to POGO, including kidnapping and fraud, have been frequent, raising widespread social concerns.
The two apprehended suspects are currently facing charges of kidnapping and illegal possession of firearms and were transferred to the Department of Justice for trial on May 7. The Immigration Bureau has also stated that additional charges will be filed. The police urge the public to remain vigilant, avoid high-risk areas, and cooperate with authorities in combating such crimes.
