The Spanish Gambling Authority (DGOJ) has announced fines totaling 77.4 million euros ($87.9 million) against 14 gambling operators for engaging in illegal gambling activities in Spain.
The 14 penalized organizations are: Wot NV, Magicwin games tech LTD, Winbet NV, Spicyjactpos games tech LTS, Lama tech limited, Chestoption limited liability company, Pennytech holding BV, Group gaem BV, Mibs NV, Fgs software solutions SRL, Investan NV, Tinietech holding BV, Adonio NV, and Techsolutions group NV.
As emphasized by the regulatory body, 13 of these operators were fined 5 million euros each for "serious" violations of Spanish gambling laws involving unlicensed operations, while one unspecified operator was fined 10 million euros. Additionally, all penalized entities have been shut down and banned from entering the Spanish gambling market for at least two years.
The regulatory body stated in its recent press release: "These sanctions reflect DGOJ's commitment to protecting consumers and strictly adhering to the Spanish gambling legal framework, particularly against operators that jeopardize player safety."
In March, the "2024 National Online Gaming Market Report" showed that the total revenue of the Spanish online gaming sector grew by 17.6% year-over-year, reaching 1.45 billion euros.
For the Spanish government, this latest update was released following the first anti-money laundering conference for the gambling industry held in February this year, which brought together representatives and regulatory bodies from the Spanish market.
Recently, the agency met with some European counterparts at the UK Gambling Commission's spring meeting to discuss key issues in the sector, particularly identity theft in online gaming.
