The Botswana Gambling Authority (GA) recently completed a new round of license issuance, granting operating permits to 10 gaming companies. According to the latest data, 6 of these companies have officially commenced operations, 1 has chosen to exit the market, and the remaining 3 are in the preparation stage for opening.
This licensing program has created over 400 jobs locally. As more gaming venues, including casinos, betting stations, and Limited Payout Machines (LPMs), begin operations, it is expected to generate an additional 2,300 job opportunities.
It is noteworthy that the licensed operator BetXplosion has taken the lead in committing to allocate 5% of its annual Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) to corporate social responsibility projects, focusing on supporting youth development, education, sports, and health promotion. Although other licensed companies have not announced specific plans, they are expected to bring more vitality to the Botswana gaming market.
GA Chairman Marvin Torto stated, "We are implementing a facilitative regulatory strategy, promoting industry development through enhanced communication, setting standards, and streamlining regulatory processes." He specifically emphasized, "Encouraging operators to adopt AI monitoring technology will help identify problematic gambling behaviors, strengthen anti-money laundering efforts, and enhance player protection."
In terms of regulatory standardization, Botswana is keeping pace with countries like Brazil. Recently, the Brazilian Ministry of Finance also issued 21 gaming licenses, indicating that the global gaming industry is moving towards more standardized development. GA Responsible Gaming Manager Portia Diteko noted, "While pursuing economic benefits, player protection must be placed at an equally important position."
Currently, Botswana has 9 licensed casinos nationwide, managed under the Gambling Act of 2012. Although the country's physical gaming regulations are strict within the African region, regulatory bodies still face the dual challenge of balancing industry development and maintaining market order. Last month, GA also ordered the destruction of outdated slot machines at the Avani Hotel, demonstrating its commitment to promoting compliant industry development.
