Cambodian police launched a raid in Kampong Chhnang Province, dismantling an international crime den suspected of online extortion, arresting 24 suspects, including 21 Vietnamese, 2 Chinese, and 1 Cambodian man.
The operation was led by the Kampong Chhnang Provincial Police, with the raid taking place in a village on the outskirts of the provincial capital. Police seized a large amount of electronic devices used for fraud, including mobile phones and laptops, which have now been confiscated as evidence.
According to preliminary investigations, the gang has been engaged in online extortion activities for a long time, using social media platforms or communication software to contact victims, then extorting them by threatening to release private information or through intimidation. Victims are from multiple countries. The police noted that the gang is well-organized with clear roles, displaying typical characteristics of transnational cybercrime.
A police officer involved in the operation stated: "This case shows that foreign nationals have become a key force in cybercrime in Cambodia, making future law enforcement cooperation and supervision of foreign nationals more challenging."
The case has now been transferred to the Ministry of Interior's Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation, and the police are pursuing other potentially fugitive members while urging the public to remain vigilant against fraud.
