On the first anniversary of the crackdown on the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO), the Philippine government has reiterated its firm stance on the comprehensive prohibition of illegal gambling activities, emphasizing that legal actions will be taken regardless of the nationality or status of the individuals involved, demonstrating a commitment to "justice without blind spots" in governance.
Winston Casio, spokesperson for the Philippine Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), recently stated that several foreign nationals involved in illegal gambling operations are currently undergoing deportation procedures. He noted, "We are waiting for the relevant countries to issue travel documents and confirm passport information, while also waiting for the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to provide clearance. The deportation process has been initiated."
To address the security risks and social issues triggered by POGO, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. signed Executive Order No. 74 on November 5, 2024, explicitly banning all online gambling activities. This order not only halts illegal operations but also suspends the issuance and renewal of all POGO licenses, requiring existing operators to immediately cease operations.
This policy is seen as one of the strongest measures in recent years by the Philippine government in combating cybercrime and maintaining public order, aiming to eradicate the networks of money laundering, human trafficking, extortion, and violent crimes associated with POGO.
Since the implementation of the executive order, the police and the Bureau of Immigration have launched large-scale raids, sealing off numerous facilities suspected of illegal operations. Law enforcement anticipates that more foreign nationals working illegally in the Philippines will be deported in the future. The Philippine government also calls for enhanced cooperation from relevant countries to jointly tackle transnational cybercrime and promote the upgrading of regional governance mechanisms.
