The Cyber Crime Division of Thailand held a press conference in Mueang Thani Province, announcing an ongoing investigation into a financial channel involving online gambling and fraud groups, suspected of transferring illicit gains abroad through the Cambodian cryptocurrency exchange "Huione Group".
According to Major General Tralong Piwan, the police have evidence that the fraud group used Thai online gambling websites and call centers to deceive and amass substantial funds, which were then dispersed into multiple "mule accounts" and converted into cryptocurrency through Huione Group, eventually turning into cash or corporate assets.
The police have not yet confirmed whether the Huione Group is related to Hun Sen's nephew, Hun To, and the investigation is still ongoing. Although Huione is a legally registered company, its pattern of fund flows is "highly unusual" and has raised significant concerns among Thai authorities.
Major General Tralong revealed that the company has been found in several similar cases in the past, although it is not yet possible to directly determine any illegal activities, "the company often appears in the paths of involved funds," and its cooperation varies during investigations, sometimes providing detailed information, sometimes refusing to respond.
The police also urge the public to be cautious of false news and rumors during sensitive periods in Thai-Cambodian relations. In recent years, AI technology has been widely used to forge images and videos, enhancing the confusion of information. The police emphasize that although online speech is protected by law, spreading false information or inciting emotions will be strictly dealt with according to the law, and the scope of accountability will be expanded.
