Michigan's online gambling revenue surpassed $300 million in May, setting a new historical record.

Michigan's online gambling revenue hit a record in May, totaling $301.4 million, breaking the state's previous monthly revenue record, mainly due to the continued growth of internet slots and table games as well as the impressive performance of the mobile sports betting market.

This new peak is 15.8% higher than the previous record set in March this year, and a 26% increase compared to May 2024. According to data released by the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), overall revenue also grew by 21.6% compared to April.

After deducting promotional expenses for operators, the adjusted total revenue in May was $271.8 million, setting another record, with a year-over-year increase of 31.4% and a growth of 4.6% from April.

iGaming Performs Strongly, Dominating Major Share

Revenue from online slots and table games alone amounted to $251.5 million, up 26.6% year-over-year, continuing to dominate the revenue stream. The adjusted revenue for this segment was $236.2 million, with an annual growth rate of 31.9%.

In terms of market share, BetMGM and its offline partner Detroit MGM Grand Hotel regained the lead in the iGaming field in May, generating a total revenue of $74 million, with an adjusted revenue of $63.3 million.

Following closely were FanDuel and MotorCity Casino, which briefly topped in April. This month, the two companies achieved total revenues of $65.9 million and $61.9 million respectively. DraftKings and Bay Mills Indian Community ranked third and fourth with revenues of $36.3 million and $34.1 million respectively.

As for commercial iGaming tax revenue, a total of $49.1 million was collected in May. Of this, the city of Detroit received an additional $12.7 million, while tribal gaming operators paid $5.8 million to regulatory authorities.

Mobile Sports Betting Maintains Growth Momentum

In terms of sports betting, total revenue in May grew by 19.3% year-over-year to $50 million, with adjusted revenue growing even faster at $35.6 million, an annual increase of 27.7%. The total betting amount reached $386.1 million, up 12.3%, indicating that the market's activity is still on the rise.

In terms of hold rate, the statewide sports betting average was 12.95%. FanDuel and MotorCity Casino continued to dominate the market with over $22.6 million in revenue and $139.5 million in bets, accounting for 16.2% of the share.

DraftKings and Bay Mills Indian Community achieved revenues of $12.5 million and betting amounts of $108.2 million, with a hold rate of 11.55%. BetMGM and Detroit MGM Grand Hotel ranked third with revenues of $7.4 million and betting amounts of $54.7 million, with a hold rate of 13.73%.

This month, the total sports betting tax revenue was $2 million, with Detroit receiving about $651,000.

Detroit's Physical Casinos Show Steady Performance

The three commercial casinos in Detroit—Detroit MGM Grand Hotel, MotorCity Casino, and Greektown Hollywood Casino—generated a total revenue of $114 million in May, slightly higher than the same period last year, with a growth rate of 0.4%.

Of this, table games and slots revenue was $112.7 million, with the remaining $1.3 million coming from retail sports betting. By market share, MGM led with 47%, followed by MotorCity Casino and Greektown Hollywood Casino at 30% and 23% respectively.

These three casinos collectively paid $9.1 million in gaming taxes to the state government and $13.4 million in city taxes to Detroit. Additionally, the retail sports betting segment also paid $48,431 and $59,193 in related taxes to the state government and Detroit city, respectively.

Michigan's gambling market continues to expand, with both iGaming and sports betting growing stronger, driving the state's performance in regulation and tax collection to new heights.
