The Danish Gambling Authority recently set a new historical record by blocking 178 illegal gambling websites in one go, the highest number since the implementation of this blocking measure in 2012. The Frederiksberg Court supported the Authority's plea, ruling to shut down these websites that were operating without Danish licenses and serving Danish users.
According to Anders Dorph, the director of the Danish Gambling Authority, the number of illegal gambling websites targeting the Danish market continues to increase, putting pressure on the regulatory body. Fortunately, the Authority possesses effective tools to promptly detect and block these sites. In 2023, the frequency of blocking actions was increased to twice a year to more swiftly cut off the service channels of unlicensed operators and protect consumer rights.
If the Authority discovers an illegal gambling site, it first notifies the operator to cease operations; if the operator does not comply, the Authority then applies to the court through internet service providers to enforce a ban.
Since 2012, Denmark has blocked a total of 616 websites suspected of illegal gambling. At the same time, the number of registrants in the Authority's self-exclusion program ROFUS has exceeded 60,000, further aiding in the prevention of gambling risks.
This large-scale blocking operation marks a solid step forward for Denmark in combating illegal online gambling, strengthening the protection of consumers.
