Gambling Industry Boosts Tanzanian Economy
The Tanzanian gambling industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, not only driving record revenues but also creating about 30,000 jobs nationwide. According to data released by the Tanzanian Gambling Board (GBT), gambling tax revenue grew from 1319.9 billion Tanzanian shillings (approximately 544 million euros) in the 2020/21 fiscal year to 2602.1 billion shillings (approximately 1.07 billion euros) in the 2024/25 fiscal year, nearly doubling over four years with an increase of 97%.
At a recent joint working meeting with the GBT and the Ministry of Finance, this trend was further emphasized, highlighting the significant role of the gambling industry in driving national economic development. GBT Service Director Daniel Sumayan stated that by the end of June 2025, the gambling industry had created about 30,000 jobs in both formal and informal sectors.
Investment Confidence Drives Industry Growth
Sumayan also mentioned that the Tanzanian gambling industry has attracted strong investor interest. Over the past two years, new investors have injected more than 667 billion Tanzanian shillings (about 275 million euros) into the industry, providing financial support for rapid expansion and further strengthening the contribution of the gambling industry to the national economy.
The government has also affirmed the achievements of the gambling industry. The government spokesperson's office, Revocatus Kassimba, praised GBT's efforts in promoting tax revenue and employment, and reiterated the government's continued support for sound regulation to ensure that the development of the gambling industry benefits the entire nation.
Continuous Regulation and Challenges
Despite the rapid growth in industry revenue, illegal gambling activities remain a regulatory challenge, especially the so-called "dubwi" (unlicensed gambling machines operating in unauthorized areas). GBT emphasized that despite these risks, the industry has exceeded expectations, bringing substantial revenue to the government.
GBT was established in 2003 and has been regulating the Tanzanian gambling market since July 1, 2003, under Act No. 4. Today, the gambling industry is not only an entertainment industry but has also become a significant force in promoting employment, investment, and economic growth.
