Philippine online gambling operators are circumventing e-wallet restrictions through encrypted messaging apps and e-commerce platforms to maintain player access. Senator Erwin Tulfo, chairman of the Senate Committee on Games and Amusement, noted that although e-wallet companies comply with central bank orders to separate gambling sites from their apps, operators are "doubling down" on finding alternative channels.
BingoPlus informs users that its gambling services are still accessible through applications, websites, and Viber, supporting deposits and withdrawals via GCash and Maya. Additionally, BingoPlus vouchers are sold on e-commerce platforms like Lazada, where users can purchase and redeem game credits through e-wallets or bank cards.
Tulfo stated that while he welcomes the cooperation of e-wallet providers with regulators, more comprehensive measures are needed to prevent gambling addiction, especially among the youth. He emphasized that collaboration between the government and businesses is crucial to address economic and psychological risks.
The Senate panel continues to hold hearings, with several lawmakers calling for a "holistic regulatory strategy" for online gambling to ensure that laws and enforcement are updated in tandem. Tulfo concluded that the industry is adapting to restrictions, but regulatory bodies must remain vigilant, promptly plug new loopholes, and safeguard public interest and digital security.
