The Tanzanian Gaming Board (GBT) has issued a warning to parents and guardians to monitor their children's activities on PlayStation games, as some games may be used for gambling activities.
GBT Acting Director General Daniel Olesumayan stated at a media briefing held at the Ministry of Finance registry on August 12, 2025, "Some PlayStation games are designed or manipulated to promote gambling, posing a serious threat to underage players. Parents must actively supervise their children's use of gaming devices to prevent them from being exposed to these risks."
This meeting aimed to introduce the media and public to different types of gambling activities and the role of GBT in regulating and standardizing the gambling industry. Given the continuous growth of the online gambling market in Tanzania, this reminder is particularly timely.
According to statistics, the gambling industry contributed approximately 17.42 billion Tanzanian shillings (about 5.7 million euros) to national revenue in the fiscal year 2024/25, and this figure is expected to grow to about 29.89 billion Tanzanian shillings (about 9.7 million euros) in the fiscal year 2025/26.
GBT stated that as one of the measures to address the expanding online gambling market, it will continue to focus on licensing management and responsible gambling. In the fiscal year 2025/26, GBT plans to issue 14,124 licenses, including 845 new licenses and 13,279 renewal licenses. Additionally, the agency will launch a nationwide responsible gambling campaign to educate young people about the risks of problem gambling and advocate safer gambling behaviors.
Last month, GBT also announced key position recruitments, including Inspection and Compliance Manager, Communications Officer, and Accountant, to enhance regulatory capabilities and ensure industry compliance.
