Star Entertainment Group recently announced the appointment of John Coster as the CEO of the Sydney casino, pending regulatory approval. Coster, who has over 40 years of experience in the gaming and hotel industry, has held senior management positions at internationally renowned resort groups such as Caesars Entertainment, Eldorado Casino, and Harrah's Entertainment, spanning the US and Asia-Pacific regions. In plain terms, they've brought in a seasoned veteran to steady the ship in Sydney. This personnel change is part of the company's efforts to accelerate restructuring and implement cost-cutting plans after facing a series of challenges.

The veteran returns: 40 years of experience aimed at operational stability
In its statement, Star Entertainment emphasized that Coster is an "experienced casino and hotel executive," whose extensive expertise will play a key role in restoring operational stability to the Sydney property. He has served as the Vice President and General Manager of Bally's Lake Tahoe, accumulating over 28 years of senior leadership experience in casino and hotel management. He will replace the former CEO, Janelle Campbell.
Change of control: New shareholder combination drives reform
Coster's appointment comes at a time when the company's ownership and governance structure are undergoing significant changes. Bally's Group and the Masson family's investment holding company currently hold a 61% controlling stake in Star Entertainment. After a difficult period, the new shareholders recently appointed Bally's Chairman Sue Kim as the Chairman of Star Entertainment, and Bruce Masson II as the Group CEO and Managing Director. The new ownership team advocates for delegating functions to individual properties and cutting senior management to control costs. They have also initiated refinancing and asset review processes to enhance liquidity and address the ongoing financial losses at the Sydney casino.
Regulatory pressure: Extension of Sydney's license suspension period
Despite ongoing internal reforms, external regulatory pressures remain severe. In March this year, the New South Wales Independent Casino Commission extended the suspension period of Star Sydney's casino license until March 31, 2026, maintaining strict supervision over its operations.
