From the Las Vegas Strip to Macau, Baccarat has always been the most profitable and sought-after casino game—but now, a technological revolution is injecting new data power into this ancient gambling table. According to the PASA official website, with the large-scale deployment of RFID smart Baccarat tables in Macau, operators have the opportunity for the first time to quantify the risks and rewards of Baccarat as accurately as tracking slot machines.

The data gap in Baccarat is narrowing with RFID smart tables taking the lead in Macau

How important is Baccarat? The data speaks volumes. By 2025, the total revenue from Baccarat (VIP + mid-field) in Macau is expected to reach $26 billion, while slot machines only account for $1.7 billion—a 15-fold difference. The Las Vegas Strip is relatively balanced, but Baccarat still plays a crucial role: last year, it garnered $1.4 billion, almost equal to the total of blackjack, Sic Bo, and roulette. Only 24 casinos offer Baccarat, with 408 tables, while the other three games have more than 1500 tables combined—a few tables support half the industry. However, casinos have long lacked data on Baccarat compared to slot machines—the latter are naturally easier to track and encode, while Baccarat has almost been a data black hole. This technological shortcoming is being addressed: in February this year, all six gaming concessionaires in Macau announced the installation of RFID technology at their tables, and gaming equipment supplier Angel Group has installed over 1100 smart table systems at properties under the Sands Group.

New UNLV study: 90% confidence in identifying abnormal players within 25-50 hands

New data paves the way for deeper analysis. Dr. Mana Azizsoltani, head of data science at Differential Labs, presented a study titled "Quantifying Luck: Baccarat Winning Probability under Given Betting Combinations" at the UNLV International Gaming and Risk Taking Conference on Tuesday. Azizsoltani stated at the conference that the model can "detect abnormal players" with over 90% confidence after about 25-50 hands. This is valuable on multiple levels for casino operations: 1. Marketing teams can more accurately issue hospitality compensations; 2. Surveillance personnel can more easily detect cheating based on abnormal results; 3. Regulatory bodies can ensure tax compliance and anti-money laundering regulations. "Baccarat is the most valuable game in the world—the core is quantifying risk, and it all comes down to this," Azizsoltani candidly told iGB. The core issue of the study is twofold: How rare are unusual losses? How rare are unusual wins? The former concerns customer development and marketing, while the latter concerns risk control and security.

Side bets account for only 6% of the betting amount but contribute about 40% to the theoretical win rate of the casino. Data makes decisions no longer based on feelings

Baccarat's side bets—a key variable—are additional bets based on specific outcomes, similar to the side plays in Sic Bo and blackjack, favored by operators for their high house advantage, but high odds also mean a high risk of substantial losses. Azizsoltani revealed that side bets account for only 6% of the betting amount in Baccarat, yet they contribute about 40% to the casino's theoretical win rate. The betting scale of top players is even more staggering—table game consultant Bill Zender told iGB last year that the highest-level players can reach or exceed $100,000 per hand. But until now, the strategy of increasing or decreasing side bets has still been an "inexact science." Clearer data can help operators determine which side bets perform best, how the probability distribution of specific side bet patterns looks, and how side bets should be arranged—"how many to place, whether squeezing them together will reduce participation, which combinations are optimal," are all issues Azizsoltani believes are worth exploring in depth. Simply put, RFID has transformed Baccarat from being "managed by experience" to being "managed by data," making every bet on the table unprecedentedly transparent.
