Great Canadian Entertainment has signed a final agreement with SE-MI-AH-MU Development Corporation to sell the Elements Casino Surrey to the Semiahmoo First Nation, allowing them to enter the British Columbia casino industry through a property located in their traditional territory. This transaction is still subject to financing, delivery conditions, regulatory approval, and the consent of the City of Surrey, which owns the underlying real estate. In plain terms, the First Nation tribe is buying a casino on their own land, and this is already the eighth such instance.

The Eighth Transaction: First Nations Gradually Becoming New Owners of BC Casinos

Adjacent to the Fraser Downs Racetrack, Elements Casino Surrey features 500 slot machines, 10 table games, and 16 electronic table games. Great Canadian has stated that it will provide up to one year of transitional period support services for the business handover to SE-MI-AH-MU. CEO Matt Anfinson remarked that this is the eighth operational sale agreement reached with BC First Nations, expressing excitement for the Semiahmoo tribe's entry into the casino industry. Over the past 18 months, Great Canadian has continuously sold casino assets in BC, which analysts suggest may be related to Apollo Global Management's focus on investment returns and repayment of $675 million in debt following its $3.3 billion acquisition in 2021.

Tribal Economy: Consolidating Traditional Territory, Creating Long-term Welfare

Semiahmoo tribal chief Harry Chappell views this acquisition as a dual milestone for economy and territory. The transaction will enhance tribal economic opportunities, solidify its strong commercial entity status in traditional territory, create welfare for its people, support regional employment, and contribute to the community's long-term prosperity. The tribal territory extends along Semiahmoo Bay, including Surrey, the town of White Rock, and parts of Washington State. This acquisition marks their first entry into the casino industry through a development company. Interested in the latest updates on Native American gaming in North America?
