On the eve of land-based casinos officially becoming history in Sweden on New Year's Day 2026, the state-owned gambling company Svenska Spel delivered an impressive financial report for the fiscal year 2025. Despite the closure of its last Casino Cosmopol land-based casino in the second quarter of last year, the company's net gambling revenue still grew by 2% year-on-year, reaching 7.69 billion Swedish Kronor (approximately $848.1 million). More notably, operating profit and net profit achieved considerable growth of 10% and 11%, respectively. This marks Svenska Spel's successful navigation through a critical period of business restructuring, with its ongoing emphasis on a digital strategy significantly offsetting the loss of physical operations and driving overall growth.

Performance Overview and the Curtain Call of "Land-based Casinos"

2025 was a year of both farewell and rebirth for Svenska Spel. With the closure of the Stockholm casino in April 2025, the company concluded its multi-year plan to exit the land-based casino business, aligning with the Swedish government's legislation to completely ban land-based casinos from January 1, 2026. However, despite losing this segment of the business, the company's overall financial performance remained robust:
Net gambling revenue: 7.69 billion Swedish Kronor, a 2% increase year-on-year.
Operating profit: 2.54 billion Swedish Kronor, a 10% increase year-on-year.
Net profit: 1.96 billion Swedish Kronor, an 11% increase year-on-year.

Company President and CEO Anna Johansson defined this year as "a year of investing in growth as well as technological, organizational, and cultural transformation," noting progress in the strategic goals of "most satisfied customers, healthy gambling, and long-term sustainable growth," with financial targets being exceeded. PASA's official website noted in tracking global gambling enterprises that successful digital transformation is a core capability for traditional operators to cope with market upheavals.

Digital Engine: The "Online" Driving Force Across Business Segments

The momentum for growth clearly stemmed from digital channels. In 2025, Svenska Spel's online sales totaled 4.87 billion Swedish Kronor, an 8% increase, accounting for 63% of the group's total sales. This trend was evident across all major business segments:

Tur lottery business: As a revenue pillar, it contributed 5.26 billion Kronor (a 2% increase). The classic game Eurojackpot remained popular, and the launch of the new game Lyckoplatsen also provided a boost.

Sports and casino business: Revenue grew 2% to 2.12 billion Kronor, mainly driven by the growth of the Oddsets sports betting brand and online casino operations.

VEGAS slot machine business: The only segment that saw a decline, with revenue falling 15% to 310 million Kronor. The company attributed this to stricter responsible gambling measures in the land market and the ongoing migration of players online.

In stark contrast, retail sales fell by 6%, and sales in restaurants and bingo halls declined by 15%. This further highlighted the irreversible trend of consumer behavior moving online.

Financial Health and Future Outlook

The strong operational performance directly translated into solid financial results and shareholder returns. After paying 507 million Kronor in taxes and deducting profits from discontinued operations, the company's net profit for the year reached 1.96 billion Kronor. Based on this, the board proposed an annual dividend of 1.8 billion Swedish Kronor, significantly higher than the 1.6 billion Kronor in 2024.

The strong performance in the fourth quarter capped off the year's growth, with net gambling revenue, operating profit, and net profit all achieving year-on-year growth. Johansson, in thanking all employees, stated: "Looking forward to continuing to deliver joy, excitement, and dreams in a safe and convenient manner in 2026."

Svenska Spel's case demonstrates that even in the face of the end of core physical operations, state-owned gambling operators can still achieve robust growth and successful transformation through forward-looking digital investments and business focus adjustments. This provides a valuable reference for operators in similar global market environments.
